Choosing the Right Hospitality School

Whether you dream of working in hotels and resorts, on a cruise ship or in a spa, choosing the right hospitality school and curriculum is important. Though it is possible to enter the industry without a degree, having one can introduce fundamental skills and open the door to roles once you graduate.

There are a number of things to consider when choosing a program, from the type of curriculum and degree to the opportunities for work experience and quality of student life.

When choosing a school, think about your goals, interests and needs. Some important considerations include:

Location: It's important to consider the location of the school, as this can affect things like housing, transportation and access to resources and opportunities. If you want to work in a particular location it may make sense to look for educational opportunities there, as it could help in getting a job when the time comes.

Program and curriculum: Research the school's programs and curriculum to ensure they align with your goals and interests. Hospitality degrees can range from certificates and diplomas to specialist programs in certain sectors and master’s degrees in business and hospitality management.  If you are 100% sure you want to be a chef you may want to choose a culinary school, while others would be better off with a program that introduces and offers experience in a range of possibilities.

Hands-on opportunities: Look into the opportunities to work in school-run hotels and restaurants, internships or other kinds of work experience.  There is no better way to learn the teamwork and customer service skills you need, and it could also help in getting your first job!

Cost and financial aid: Consider the cost of the school and the availability of financial aid or scholarships.

Reputation and accreditation: Research the school's reputation and accreditation status to ensure it is reputable and has been evaluated by a recognised accrediting agency.

Campus culture and student life: Visit the campus, talk to current students, and consider the school's extracurricular activities, student organisations and resources for student support. It could also help to look at alumni organisations and networks, as these can be of great help later on.

No matter the school you choose, remember that in hospitality experience is an essential part of the educational experience. Look for ways and opportunities to apply what you learn in real-life settings both during your time as a student and after you enter the workforce; combine, education and early experience are the start of a great career.
